Ask about anyone 30 years old or more if they still have their wisdom teeth, and the near universal response will be they were gone by the time they reached mid-20s in age. For decades, Americans have routinely had their wisdom teeth extracted during late high school or college years. It’s just been considered “the right thing to do,” and has been encouraged by various groups such as the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Now, The Wall Street Journal reports this same group, AAOMS, has said every patient is unique and different, and no “one size fits all” policy should be in place regarding wisdom teeth and young Americans.

The removal of wisdom teeth is not a simple process, and, in fact, it is a type of surgery. In most cases, patients are placed under some form of anesthesia and wisdom teeth are removed by an oral surgeon trained in this area, in a specialty setting office or clinic designed to handle such surgeries.

In a new study published, the AAOMS has updated its 2011 statements on the removal of wisdom teeth, declaring that no one general policy should be applied to every patient. While the AAOMS cites a number of health factors for the continued removal of wisdom teeth for most people, it also make the counter argument urging regular monitoring of wisdom teeth in adults and dealing with any pain with other methods than surgical extraction.

This points to a trend in medicine – weather oral medicine or issues dealt with by other physicians – that the individual needs of patients should be determined before any blanket protocols or policies are automatically applied to everyone without question.

The surgical removal of wisdom teeth is something which must be treated as a serious subject; it is a permanent alteration of your body. In many other parts of medicine today, things which were considered “absolutes” have now been subjected to change and updating as new studies and new information has become available.

In our dental office, we constantly stay abreast of even the most minor changes in dentistry, to ensure we provide the best care. Don’t be afraid to discuss with us the importance of deciding what is best to do to your wisdom teeth or those of your children who have become young adults. We promise we will work with you to provide you only the best recommendations.

Flouride/Anticavity Rinses-

These are beneficial for those who are prone to cavities, have recession or who are not dilgent flossers. These are available in different flavors. We recommend Act or Act Anticavity Kids.

Antibacterial/Multi-Protection

These are recommended to reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth that can lead to gum disease and also to freshen breath. They also can reduce the amount of plaque buildup. We recommend Listerine Total Care. Total Care Zero or Crest Pro Heath Multi-Protection are also recommended and they do not contain alcohol.

Dry Mouth Rinses

If you take any medication or have a medical condition that causes dry mouth, then these are for you. We recommend Act Total Care Dry Mouth or Biotene.

The tragedy of Alzheimer’s Disease doesn’t mean Alzheimer’s patients (and, other patients with other forms of dementia, such as Parkinson’s Disease dementia) can’t maintain good dental care.

As with other issues with those suffering from dementia, reminders to take care of chores often includes reminders to brush their teeth. Care givers know so many routine things flow to them, such as scheduling regular dental checkups, making sure toothbrushes are still useable, and the right kind of toothpaste is being used.

At some point, care givers may take over the cleaning of the dementia patient’s teeth. The professional staff at Dr. David Dersh’s office can assist care givers learning how to effectively clean someone else’s teeth.

Often, dementia patients know something is “wrong,” but can’t tell someone a problem has arisen. That’s why mouth checks by care givers and dental professionals are important so the patient can be examined for damage to teeth, gums, or the tongue, such as by biting.

Look for signs of dental problems in dementia patients, such as a rubbing or touching by the patient of their cheek or jaw, moaning or shouting out, head rolling or “nodding,” or flinching when washing the face or being shaved. The refusal of hot or cold food or drinks is a sign of possible trouble, along with restlessness, poor sleep, increased irritation or aggression, or a refusal or reluctance to put in dentures when previously this was not an issue.

Care givers should know there is never a hesitation by anyone in Dr. David Dersh’s office to provide regular dental care to patients with any type of dementia. Every patient is precious; our goal is to provide the highest level of care to everyone. Care givers often unnecessarily worry about anxiety in dementia patients being in the dentist’s office and they may be uncooperative, or have concerns the patient may become upset on the way to the dentist’s office. These worries should never be a concern; the first concern is for the overall health of the patient, including dental health. Dr. David Dersh and staff are well prepared to work with any patient, no matter what the level of dementia.

Care givers should feel free to call the office and discuss any individual situation, and the staff can help prepare the care giver and patient for the trip to the dentist. Patient care and good dental care are the first concern.

Dental Implants for Children

Did you think that dental implants were only for adults? Well think again. Implants can replace teeth that never formed or were lost due to trauma. The dentist makes a temporary appliance to fill the space until the child is done growing, then an implant is placed. After it has healed, a post and crown are put in as a permanent replacement. This is a great alternative to removable appliances or fixed bridge work that necessitated grinding down the adjacent healthy teeth. If you would like further information on this procedure, please ask at your next appointment.

We’re not your parents’ dentist. Things have changed in dentist offices in the past few years, and all of the changes have been made to make your visit to the dentist a pleasant experience.

When you walk into our waiting room, you enter a warm, friendly environment. No harsh colors, no institutional furniture. Just pleasant surroundings, as if you were in someone’s home. We have a television in our waiting room for those who choose not to read. And, each treatment room also has a television you can see from the chair, so you can keep up with the latest storylines or breaking news. You choose the channel.

For children, we have a video game console for older children, and toys for the younger ones. There is something for everyone.

Our equipment and dental tools are a result of the latest technologies and sophisticated dental techniques. We constantly keep abreast of the latest changes and improvements which help make you more comfortable.

Many improvements have been made in offerings to make you at ease in the chair. The latest techniques and any necessary drugs are used to help deflect any minimal discomfort you may feel during a procedure.

Our office provides oral care beyond cleaning and filling teeth. We offer a full array of dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, hygiene treatments, tooth whitening, and even alternative therapies. We are a complete-care office.

Today’s dental insurance differs dramatically from medical insurance plans. Over the past two to three decades, the benefits have not changed, but the dental insurance premium costs have gone up dramatically. We have chosen not to accept any type of dental insurance as payment to our office. As a result, we keep our fees as reasonable as possible, and simultaneously assist you in filling out dental insurance forms which you may submit directly to your insurance carrier for reimbursement to you of our fees. This arrangement helps us keep our fees as low as possible, while maintaining the highest possible level of care in our practice.

We are happily today’s dentist, providing a high level of quality care in a calm, cool, collected and friendly environment. If you have any questions, never hesitate to ask; we’re always available to help you understand how to create and keep excellent oral health.
